Fishing Tips

Light-Line Care

Show it some neglect and it will show you how easy it is to lose fish

Timothy Kusherets

When fishing with exceptionally light line make sure to change the entire spool as often as five to six trips in the salt. Fishing freshwater actually only requires changing the spool either as the spool depletes from line or once each season. I like to fish for the monsters with light line but the ones in the salt showed me that you'd better stay on top of managing your line often if you expect to get them in. A blue-back Coho snapped the four-pound test I'd been using and the entire spool was only three days old…can you believe it? Your line will last as long as you take care of it. Show it some neglect and it will show you how easy it is to lose fish.

The fastest way to ensure your line stays fresh it to hide it from sun, when in storage, and to run it under cold water. Because freshwater does not promote oxidation, you don't have to worry too much about rust; however, take the time to dry off anyting on your reel and rod that is metal...just in case.
