Fishing Tips

Secret Sauce

Prevent “fishing spies” from figuring out what your secret sauce is and scrape the cover name of the product off the bottle

Timothy Kusherets

Every bottle is coded by either color of the scent or the bottle.Well there it is; fishing scent that is truly masked from everyone. Mind what you scrape off the package and memorize what it is. If it works and you forget what the scent is there is the risk of not being able to purchase or replicate it, especially if you combine gels and liquids like I do.

In the competitive arena of fishing there is the constant presence of anglers trying to find out what works and what doesn’t, even at the cost of being dubious. In some cases you can actually see other anglers looking over your shoulder to find out what you’re using especially when fish are biting your hook and no one else’s. The easiest and fastest way to prevent these “fishing spies” from figuring out what your secret sauce is to scrape the cover name of the product off the bottle. Depending on how your scent is package dictates how hard it will be to rid the name of it, but in the end is worth the effort.
The most reliable way to recall what is what is to color code scents and then mark them down on a list until you’ve got them memorized. When experimenting with new scents always make a note as to what it is and which species it’s meant to catch. Scents are almost always species specific and it’s possible to end up fishing with trout scent while fishing for bass; if it fails you could end up erroneously thinking that it doesn’t work when in fact it does.
Don’t misunderstand, I’m willing to tell anyone what I’m using but spying is like stealing and I’ll never reward that. Anyway, dealing with nosey fishermen like this is politically correct without being rude.
