Dosewallups

Easy access to wilderness fishing.

Timothy Kusherets

Proper slinky fishing for salmon, trout, and steelhead.

Located in Jefferson County Washington United States.

Dosewallups is a great place for hooking into either pinks or chum. The pinks run every other year while the chum consistently come back each and every year.
The directions to Dosewallups campground are relatively simple. Highway 101 North or South, on the west side of the Pacific Peninsula in the State of Washington, will take you directly to the campsite. The park there affords you choices of staying the night, or staying for just the day. If you stay overnight you will have to pay a nominal fee to use the facilities, but getting the edge on the water makes it worth the time. The river runs right through the park, and the walk is relatively short. If you fish the river you should bear in mind that you may not fish below the highway bridge. Consult your regulation handbook for any changes that might take place.
One of the reasons that I like fishing there is the run the fish make. Because it is a glacially fed system, the water is consistently colored gray, which puts almost all of the fish at ease and you can see them right there at the surface, more often than not. The further into the season you go the colder it gets, and as the freezing level falls the level of visibility of the river increases, and as a consequence, the fish become more skittish because they can see you better. Because the access to the river is both wide and flat, you will need to walk to the water line with trepidation, any quick approaches scare the fish either to deeper water or out of the area entirely.
A good rule of thumb for fishing in this area is to consider the size of the fish. The smaller it is the smaller the lure you are going to want to use, conversely, the larger the fish, the larger the offering. The faster movement of the river affords you the ability to make a wider range of choices of lures to use that includes drift-fishing gear. The more colored the water is the shorter your leader can be, but make yourself aware of the legal limits of how short your leader can be, your regulation handbook will keep you apprised of the ever changing rules to the systems that you want to fish. The best times to fish this area are in August and then November.
